802 Boso inns check out at 10:00. The village of Nekoji launches the Eleven O'Clock Club and publishes 69 inns that check out at 11:00 or later

Summary: 69 lodgings on the Boso Peninsula have a standard check-out of 11:00 or later. We read all 2,207 property pages on three booking sites to build the list. Japanese sleep is the shortest in the OECD, yet most Boso inns check out at 10:00. Washin Nekoji Village, home to 16 rescue cats, starts a pledge of inns that promise a slow morning.
The morning of a trip is the morning that most needs sleep
The first morning of a trip is the morning that most needs extra sleep. Yet on 18 October 2026, of 1,067 Boso lodgings listed on Rakuten Travel, 802 checked out at 10:00. Breakfast, packing and payment are squeezed into the first, foggiest 1 hour after waking.
10:00 is not a rule. Article 9 of the Japan Tourism Agency's model lodging terms leaves the room-use hours for each property to fill in.
The science behind it
- Japanese sleep time is the shortest in OECD comparisons at 442 minutes (nippon.com citing OECD data). In the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's 2023 National Health and Nutrition Survey, 38.5% of men and 43.6% of women sleep less than 6 hours a day
- On the first night in an unfamiliar place, one side of the brain stays on watch; people fall asleep more slowly and react more to sounds, the "first-night effect" (Current Biology 2016, PMID 27112296)
What the Eleven O'Clock Club is
On 20 October 2026, Washin Nekoji Village (Washinmura Co., Ltd.), a farmhouse glamping stay in Futtsu, Chiba, launched the Eleven O'Clock Club (十一時倶楽部): a group of lodgings whose standard check-out is 11:00 or later, as stated on a booking site or the official site. Its tagline is "ゆっくりの朝を約束する宿", inns that promise a slow morning.
- One condition: a standard check-out of 11:00 or later, written on a booking site or the official site
- Not self-reported: the author checked booking sites page by page
- Chapter one is 69 lodgings on the Boso Peninsula in seven areas: Tateyama and Minami-Boso; Kamogawa; Katsuura, Onjuku and Isumi; Uchibo; Yoro Valley, Otaki and Ichihara; Kujukuri, Mobara and Togane; Choshi and Asahi
- Published: the article (Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese), an evidence page (fact ledger F1 to F42, 220 sources), a dataset (JSON and CSV, CC BY 4.0) and 10 illustrations
This is not a judgment on inns with a 10:00 check-out. Some cannot move it because of cleaning and staffing. The club is where inns that can move it step forward.
The price of 1 hour, and the happiness of 1 hour
- The price of time: under the overtime rule of the model lodging terms, 1 extra hour can be charged at up to one third of the room rate, 6,667 yen on a 20,000-yen room
- Willingness to pay: in a 2022 Oracle Hospitality and Skift survey of 5,266 consumers in 9 countries including Japan, 37% said they would pay more for early check-in or late check-out
- Happiness: a study of 6,271 people in the United States, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands (PNAS 2017, PMID 28739889) found that people who spend money to buy time report greater life satisfaction, and in an experiment with 60 working adults the day they bought time was happier than the day they bought a thing
An 11 o'clock check-out is the inn giving that 1 hour away as a gift.
For travelers from abroad
For travelers from UTC+8 regions such as Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, 11:00 in Japan is 10:00 for the body. The list is published in four languages, and each entry links to the official site, the official booking page and the property pages on Rakuten Travel, Jalan and Yahoo! Travel.
Method
On 18 October 2026, a program read every Boso property page on Rakuten Travel (1,067), Jalan (589) and Yahoo! Travel (551) and took the time next to "チェックアウト". After removing duplicates, 282 properties had a check-out of 11:00 or later: 55 hotels and ryokan (50 listed; the other 5 are adults-only leisure hotels and are not listed) and 19 glamping sites, villas and similar lodgings with 4 or more rooms, 69 in total across seven areas. Both error directions were checked: properties known to check out at 10:00 must not be classed as 11:00, and 60 independently found Rakuten properties showed no misses. The list reflects the reading date; please confirm on the property page before booking.
Why the village of Nekoji speaks up
On 22 July 2026, Washin Nekoji Village announced "Nekoji" (猫治), a way of spending time in the satoyama countryside alongside rescue cats. On 1 October 2026 that release was selected for the Best101 of the PR TIMES Press Release Awards 2026 (4,236 entries). Cats do not hurry to fit human schedules. The Eleven O'Clock Club is one of Nekoji's habits, sleeping well and not rushing the morning, promised from the inn's side. Washin Nekoji Village set its own standard check-out at 11:00 as the first pledge.
Author TK Lin (林毅祥) says: "The difference is not just 1 hour. It is a piece of happiness you could pay for, which the inn decides to give you for free."
